What is the Bible?
Christians acknowledge that the Bible is the word of God, that it was written by people who were moved by the Holy Spirit to write down the words that God wanted recorded (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21). The Bible has two parts - the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament was completed more than 2,000 years ago, before the time of Jesus. It contains many prophecies about a Savior. The New Testament was written about 2,000 years ago, during the first century, which is the century in which Jesus lived. It explains that Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies about a Savior (also called a Messiah or Christ). What is Christianity?
Christianity is the acknowledgment that Jesus Christ is the son of God, that he died for our sins, that he was resurrected, and that all who believe in him will receive the gift of eternal life in heaven with God. To learn more about Christianity, visit wels.net and about-jesus.org. To help explain Christianity, Christians wrote creeds, many centuries ago, that were intended to be summaries of Christianity. The Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed are two examples, and they often are recited in Christian churches today.Who is Jesus?
Jesus lived about 2,000 years ago in the land of Israel. He is the Son of God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born to the virgin Mary. He is fully human and he is fully God. Jesus led a perfect and sinless life. He died for our sins. He was resurrected. He ascended into Heaven. He will return to judge the living and the dead. Those who believe in Jesus are forgiven of their sins and given the gift of eternal life with God. As expained in the Bible:For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John 3:16-18, KJV)
What is salvation?
Salvation involves the forgiveness of sin. It is a gift from God, allowing us eternal life in heaven. Salvation is found in Jesus:Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12, KJV, in reference to Jesus Christ)
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6, NIV)
Who needs salvation?
Everyone needs salvation:For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23, KJV)
But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2, KJV)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23, KJV)
Who can be saved?
Everyone can be saved. Everyone. Your family, your friends and your enemies can be saved. You can be saved. Here are some quotes from Jesus, as recorded in the New Testament of the Bible, that help explain this:Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (Matthew 28:19, KJV)
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15-16, NIV)
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (Luke 24:47, KJV)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16, KJV)
What must I do to be saved?
Many people ask what they must I do to be saved? The answer is simple:That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9, NIV)
